Places to Visit: Freedom to Roadtrip – One of my favorite places to escape everything. It feels like you’re walking back into history as the Blackland Prairie was before the growth and expansion of North Texas.
The landscape always has a different personality through the seasons. Wildflowers and birdlife is quite abundant and a hike is a great way of exploring nature close to home.
I have several day studies of this location as well as poetry inspired by getting away from Dallas. On several visits, I have seen only a handful of people, most of them fathers with sons fishing or small family gathering.

One of many trips to this wonderful landscape. In the spring all the wildflowers compete for attention and in the Summer the tall grass is cut shorter as the prairie prepares for fall.
I first learned about it when I visited Blackland Raptor Center to see the birds on first Saturday. While taking a tour of the reserve, the guide told me about a wonderful prairie nearby that captures the feeling and beauty of the old Blackland Prairie. My photos of the Center.
